Girafas no Parque Zoológico Nacional

Neste zoológico existem girafas da subespécie Masai e também da subespécie Reticulada!

Fundado em 1889, tem uma área de 48,5 ha e é administrado por National Zoological Society.

The 163-acre Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Rock Creek Park was established by an Act of Congress in 1889 “for advancement of science and the instruction and recreation of the people”. It is a world leader in exhibition, conservation, zoological research, and education.

It was the first zoo established with the purpose of saving animals on the brink of extinction. Today, nearly 130 of the Zoo’s species of animals are endangered or threatened. The Zoo participates in 40 of the 70 Species Survival Plans coordinated by the American Zoological Association to ensure the survival in zoos of populations of endangered species.

The giraffe is often referred to as “the animal built by committee”, an assembly of left-over parts, put together after the divine creator had run dry of ideas. - Robin Pellew, The Encyclopedia of Mammals.

Smithsonian Institution Stamp. Isuue Date: August 10, 1946. This 3 cent stamp was issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Smithsonian Institution, which includes 13 major museums and the National Zoo and houses more than 78 million of the world's scientific, historical, and cultural treasures.

The design of this stamp is based on a photograph by F.B. Kestner of “the Castle on the Mall”. First placed on sale in Washington, D.C., this stamp was printed in violet brown by steel engraving. The caption on the stamp reads, “FOR THE INCREASE AND DIFFUSION OF KNOWLEDGE AMONG MEN”.

Nota: O Zoo de Washington, por exemplo, dispõe de semen e pele de diversas espécies para as reproduzir, talvez, algum dia...

FOTOS DE PESQUISA

1) Mitchell Bush and Scott Citino (former Zoo resident and Associate Veterinarian) collecting data on a field-anesthetized giraffe in Kruger National Park, South Africa. This ongoing study is documenting dosage rates and physiological parameters to ensure the safety of the patient.

The National Zoo’s Mitchell Bush, Chief of Veterinary Services at the Conservation and Research Center (CRC) in Front Royal, Virginia, has devoted a large part of his professional career to studying how best to anesthetize captive and free living animals. A pioneer in this field, he has also taken on the toughest cases, giraffes being a prominent example. Bush has had a lifetime interest in giraffes and has developed safer anesthesia procedures for these sensitive, hard-to-manage animals.

Note that a tube has been placed in the animal’s trachea, which is attached to oxygen to support respiration during the procedure. An IV catheter is placed in the giraffe’s jugular vein for collecting blood samples and administering drugs.
