Philadelphia Zoo Welcomes New Two-Year-Old Giraffe

Philadelphia, PA – July 10, 2003. The Philadelphia Zoo today officially welcomed a new two-year-old female reticulated giraffe. Randa, which means “to act big” in Swahili, joins the Zoo's two other female reticulated giraffes, Twigga and Fumba.

Reticulated giraffes are one of nine subspecies of giraffes. All subspecies of giraffe are distinguished by their coat pattern and geographical distribution. “Reticulated” refers to the net-like pattern on the giraffe's hair. Amazingly, giraffes have the largest eyes of any land mammal, and their tongues are more than a foot-and-a-half long.

At two years old, Randa is about 11 feet tall and could grow up to 16 feet and eventually weigh 2,600 pounds. Randa came to the Philadelphia Zoo from the Cape May County Park Zoo in New Jersey.

As part of the Zoo's exciting new African adventure, Boscov's Safari Quest, twice a day, children can win the opportunity to feed the Zoo's giraffes by correctly answering trivia questions about the animals.
