Straddling the equator and bisected by 13 rivers and numerous mountain-fed streams, it is an especially beautiful area of Kenya.
It has diverse scenery from woodlands at 3,400ft (1,036m) on the slopes of Nyambeni Mountain Range, nordeste do Monte Quênia, to wide open plains with meandering riverbanks dotted with doum palms.
In the mid 1980's, the Park suffered from poaching, however KWS armed wildlife security patrols have driven out the poachers and the elephant population has stabilised with breeding herds settling down.
The Park is most famous as the setting for Joy Adamson's book “Born Free”, the story of the Adamson's life and research amongst lion and cheetah. “Elsa” the lioness was the most well-known and her grave is marked here.

Parque Nacional Kora (Kora National Park)
Desconheço sobre girafas neste parque...
Com 1.787km², é administrada pelo Kenya Wildlife Services (http://www.kws.org/kora.html).
Another area made famous by the Adamsons is Kora National Park. Aberto em outubro de 1989, 280kms. North east of Nairobi, it is an easy outing from Meru National Park. Bounded by the Tana River, George Adamson's camp was here until he died.
A feature is the sudden appearance of lush green “oases”, created by the lines of doum palms which shelter the banks of the Tana River. Striking are the Inselberts – isolated rocky outcrops covered in vegetation which create random islands above the plains.
Kora has diverse wildlife: 21 species of fish have been recorded, with 500 species of insect, 33 molluscs and 40 reptiles. Species to view include: elephant, Lesser Kudu, wild dog, striped and spotted hyena, leopard and cheetah.
Kora National Park is located in Coast Province, Kenya. It is located 125 kilometres east of Mount Kenya. The park was initially gazetted as a nature reserve in 1973. It was gazetted as a national park in 1990, following the murder of George Adamson by poachers. Meru National Park and the Tana River mark 65 kilometres of the park's northern boundary. Features of the Tana River include Adamson's Falls, Grand Falls and the Kora rapids. Its eastern boundary is marked by the Mwitamvisi River. The park has several seasonal rivers. The topography of the park slopes gently from an altitude of 490m in the south-west to an altitude of about 270m in the north-east. The central area of the park is an undulating peneplain. Basement ridges protrude above the surface of the peneplain as rocky inselbergs, domed hills or hard rocks that rise steeply from the surrounding area. The highest of these inselbergs are Mansumbi (488m), Kumbulanwa (450m) and Kora Rock (442m). The cracks and crevices in the inselbergs have become filled with soil, and a wide variety of herbs, shrubs and small wind-blown trees have become established in them. There is a wide variety of animal species in the park, including the caracal, cheetah, elephant, genet, hippopotamus, spotted and striped hyenas, leopard, lion, serval, wildcat and several types of antelope. The vegetation in the park is mostly comprised of acacia bushland. There are also riverine forests of doum palm and Tana River poplar. The park had serious problems with poachers in the 1980s and 1990s. George Adamson and two of his assistants were murdered by poachers in the park in 1989. Adamson is buried in the park.
